Probability Survey for 2E2

Hi all of you. Need one last favour from you for this topic.

Could you help me fill out the survey found at this link by Wednesday afternoon please. I need the information for a report I am writing.

Thank you.

PS - there is another 'just-for-fun' casino session in school on Wednesday at the same place from 10 to about 12. Drop me an SMS if you are coming so that it doesn't get overcrowded.

Task D

Basic Properties of Probabilities.

1. Again from this website, read point 5.

2. Read TB 2B pg 149 – 150
(Try It! solutions are here)

Assignment
TB Pg 151 – 153
Q3, 5, 7, 10 (requires internet research)
Optional : 14 (very good thinking question)

Task C

Discovering Sample Space

1. Read TB 2B pg 146 – 148
(Try It! solutions are here)

2. Again from this website, read point 4.

Consider what we have learnt in the topic of sets. The concept of Sample Space in Probability is similar to a concept in Set Notation. What is this relationship?

Task B

You have a few readings to do for this task, followed by a regular assignment Exercise 11.1 (to be done on foolscap paper) which needs to be handed in.

1. Read TB 2B, pg 136 – 143 (including all the examples)
(Solutions to the three Try It! can be found here

2. At the following website, read points 1,2 and 3.

3. Read and try out the questions at
Mrs. Glosser’s Math Goodies, Introduction To Probability

4. Use Google! to search for other websites explaining Basic Probability Concepts.
(some explanations can be quite confusing…just read through and try to understand)

Assignment
TB Ex 11.1, pg 144 – 145
Q2, 4, 6, 10, 12, 13

Probability Self Study Objectives

Dear 2E2,

We will be studying Probability (TB 2B Chap 11) in a series of tasks.

Some of the key objectives that you will need to achieve are as follows

1. Understand that probability is a measure of chance.

2. Know the meaning of the terms

a. Sample Space
b. Event
c. Complement of an Event
d. Outcome
e. Fair / Unbiased
f. Equally Likely
g. Certain Event
h. Impossible Event

3. List the sample space for a simple chance situation.

4. Calculate the probability of a single event.

I recommend that you attempt the tasks in alphabetical order, but you do not have to. Some tasks have assignments that you will need to hand in. Please take note of the deadlines for the tasks given.

For each task, you may use the COMMENTS portion to ask or answer questions.

Last but not least, you will need to fill up a feedback form on your learning journey through this process. Your honesty and frank response will be much appreciated.

Yours truly,
Mr. Joseph Giri
